01/05/2014: Over 200 Artists Demonstrating Their Work

The 36th Art in Action takes place on the 17 – 20 July at Waterperry Gardens, near
Wheatley, Oxfordshire. Art in Action offers visitors the opportunity to see a wide spectrum
of art and contemporary craft being demonstrated by professional artists and crafters, many
of whom are leading exponents in their field. Visitors can watch the artists at work and ask

01/05/14: War Artists

In 2014, the centenary year of The Great War, Art in Action is both thrilled and honoured to be able to
announce a new section of the festival, one dedicated entirely to war artistry. Four war artists will
take part in Art in Action 2014 offering visitors the chance to experience at close range, the process
involved in creating a war painting. Douglas Farthing, Graeme Lothian, Andrew Miller and David
Rowlands will this year further diversify an already rich throng of artists and makers with their
individual styles and working practises…


01/05/2014: Andrew Marr To Speak at Art In Action 2014

A lifetime’s enjoyment of drawing and the recent publication of ‘A Short Book About
Drawing’ doubly qualify radio, TV broadcaster and writer Andrew Marr to be guest speaker
on the opening day of Art in Action 2014. Following a tradition begun in the Open Air
Theatre last year when Lord (Melvyn) Bragg and Bishop Richard Harries discussed spirituality
in art, visitors to this year’s 4-day celebration of the arts will see and hear Andrew speak of
his own passion for painting and drawing. This is something he has done spontaneously all
his life, and has proved a fulfilling way of winding down wherever he is, even when working
on assignments abroad…

Art in Action is a festival of fine art and master craftsmanship – with a difference. A small village of marquees, laid out at Waterperry Gardens, contains 400 artists, teachers, performers and musicians. An average of 25,000 visitors come over four days each July, to watch and learn from demonstrations in painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, calligraphy, illustration, glass, metalwork, jewellery, textiles, woodwork and more…
