North Indian Classical Kathak Dance – Alpana Sengupta

Alpana Sengupta is recognised as a brilliant exponent of the vivid and mesmerising Kathak style of Indian dance. Her breathtakingly energetic performances have earned her an enthusiastic international following.

She was the first Indian dancer to regularly tour this country and continues to be an influential pioneer in the development and awareness of Indian dance in the West, working tirelessly to bring Indian dance to an every increasingly wider audience. Her highly professional reputation has been gained not only for her numerous performances but also for her dedicated teaching.

Kathak is arguably the most exhilerating and accessible of Indian classical dance forms and Alpana is noted for her dynamic presentations of the rhythmic aspects of the dance as well as for her mastery over mime.

Her style is predominantly that of the Raigarh school of Kathak, a combination of the styles from Lucknow and Jaipur, which she learnt from Guru Firtudas Vaishnav and which she continues to present in pure traditional form.
