Lectures

The Lectures at Art in Action aim to provide an insight into the thoughts, processes and inspiration which lay behind the creation of a work of art. All lectures are free and time isalloted for questions from the public.

Libby Horner is the world’s leading authority on Frank Brangwyn. Curated the most comprehensive exhibition ever held of Brangwyn’s work (2006, Leeds, Bruges and Swansea); co-edited Frank Brangwyn 1867-1956; wrote Frank Brangwyn: A Mission to Decorate Life for The Fine Art Society/Liss Fine Art selling show in 2006; presented and wrote the script for the Brangwyn DVD ART? It’s just a job!’; started a website devoted to Brangwyn’s work. Currently compiling the catalogue raisonné of all Brangwyn’s work – both fine and decorative art – estimated to be in excess of 12,000 works!

11:00 – 12:00The Great East India Company Adventure (1600 – 1850)Lecturer: Gerald Davison
The colourful tale of the building of a trading company that became the largest commercial undertaking the world has ever seen and gave Great Britain its Empire in Asia. Gerald Davison, author, lecturer and former art dealer is a leading specialist in Asian art, culture and history. He is a world authority on Chinese ceramics and his books on this aspect are among the standard works on the subject. He has travelled extensively in South East Asia with long periods of time spent in China, Japan and the Philippines. As well as completing lecture tours of China, Australia, around the UK for the National Association of Decorative & Fine Art Societies (NADFAS) and on cruise ships he has led land tours of the Chinese mainland. Gerald is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts and of the Oriental Ceramic Society.

Roger Mitchell studied History at Oxford and Fine Art at Leeds. Awarded Churchill Fellowship to travel and study in USA. Former College Vice-Principal who now lectures for University of Liverpool and for Adult Residential Colleges. Organises and leads country house study tours and tries to find time for research at Chatsworth.

11:00 – 12:00Amish Way of Life and HistoryLecturer: Jan Jefferson
Jan Jefferson has degrees in History and International Relations. Grew up in Pennsylvania. Writes and broadcasts on Amish people and their quilts; author A Guide to Amish Quilts published in 1998 and A Family Scrapbook published 2005. Conducts tours to Pennsylvania. Collects American and Amish quilts. Lectures to historical and archaeological societies, WI Groups, needlework groups, gives museum and gallery talks.
