Martin Damen

One Oak

As a maker of hand-carved spoons and bowls and a partner of the OneOak Project, he will be demonstrating the traditional rural craft of spoon carving.

There are two characteristics that apply to all the work that Martin produces. Firstly, he follows traditional practice and uses wood that has been locally sourced. Secondly, only traditional tools and skills are used. Once the timber has been felled and cut to manageable lengths traditional tools and techniques are used throughout the production and finishing process. Typically a small number of tools are required and emphasis is placed on their effective use and an appreciation of the material being worked. Consequently, all pieces are entirely hand crafted.

Such an approach is not suitable for modern mass production. However, each item is unique having an inherent beauty in both form and material while remaining usable everyday.
