12 – Figure Clay Modelling: Edward Murray

Students will learn how to model a figure from life, working to a 1/3rd life scale.  Due to the restraints of time we will be working on a fairly small scale without a back iron or armature for support.  The figures will be modelled in either a lying or seated pose suitable for unsupported clay work.  Students will gain an understanding of how to work with clay, becoming fluent with measurement techniques and the use of anatomical reference.  We will consider and discuss some examples of master works to examine a range of different approaches to figurative work.  The students will also learn how to hollow and prepare their work for the kiln.  The primary emphasis of the course is on working directly from observation to produce a realistic three dimensional representation of the model.  Work can be fired and collected for an additional £20.

Tea and coffee will be provided each day on arrival and in the afternoon.  Lunch – students can either bring their own lunch or at Waterperry there are delicious lunches at the Tea Shop and in London there are various local eateries.
